The Hmong community of Oroville will be having its annual Hmong New Year Festivity this coming weekend at the Nelson Sports Complex in Thermalito. The event is open to the public. We are expecting anywhere from five to seven thousand people during the two days event. Participants are expected to be coming from southern California, and as far north as Oregon.
This year, we are celebrating “The 38th Anniversary of Hmong in America.” This year’s theme is “MOVING FORWARD”.
Butte County has been home for the Hmong community for nearly three decades. The first Hmong family settled in Oroville was in 1985. Today, Butte County is home to about eight thousand Hmong residents. For the past 38 years, the Hmong New Year festivals had been blessed with General Vang Pao’s presence. With General Vang Pao gone, the community is committed to unite strongly together to preserve our rich culture and heritage in moving forward to build a stronger community.
On Saturday, we anticipate having our local elected officials, honorable and distinguished guests along with community leaders join us. The city of Oroville Mayor Linda Dahlmeire office, Butte County Board of Supervisor Bill Connelly, State Senator Jim Nielsen, the Gen. Vang Pao’s family and the Honorable Congressman Doug LaMalfa will take part in the ribbon cutting ceremony along with community leaders to kick off the New Year event.
