Why I’m Running for Sacramento City School Board
Dear Friends and Family,
At a young age, I learned the importance of stepping up and working hard to help others. Growing up in south Sacramento, I experienced the poverty that existed within my community. As the eldest of 16 children, my parents taught me that education was the path out of poverty. A proud product of public education, I understand first-hand how investment in our public schools can save lives. My high school teacher, Ms. Crowder, spent hours of her own time with me after school to ensure I succeeded.
After being the first in my family to go to college, I returned home determined to improve the community that raised me. This week I launched my campaign to run for Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD), Area 5.
Over the years, as community organizer, I have witnessed an entire generation of students deprived of a quality education in south Sacramento. As a parent advocate, working alongside families, I’ve seen committed and passionate parents become disenchanted because parent engagement never happens on a school site level. I am running for school board because we need to change our schools. We need a school board member who will be proactive and responsive to the needs of our students and families. We need a district that provides authentic parent engagement to help working families become more involved in their children’s education. We need to support and empower our teachers to make sure they have the tools to do what they do best. But mostly, I am running for school board because we cannot afford to have another generation of students fall through the cracks.
On the school board, I will devote myself to making SCUSD a better organization that serves our students, parents, and teachers — not the other way around. I look forward to working alongside each of you to find innovative solutions to meet the needs of our diverse student population. By working together, I know we can help our students receive an exceptional education and move on to accomplish great things for themselves, their families and their communities.
